Every year before Christmas,
we go downtown to see the whimsical, artistic display
created annually by Marshall Field’s (now Macy’s).
Every year is a different theme,
with a labyrinth of scenes from a classic story.
The display is free to the public,
which is such a lovely gift.
The artists spend months creating
each window into another world,
with moving characters and intricate details.
This year’s display follows the story of Mary Poppins.
There she is, climbing a ladder to the stars,
which seems completely possible to my preschooler.
When we passed under the scene where
Michael, Jane, Mary and her uncle
were floating above us,
levitating higher and higher the more they laughed,
he said, “Maybe someday if I laugh enough,
I can fly, too!”
I hope so, little man.
