this beautiful mallard
didn’t realize he was being watched
by me and my boy.
He and his flock
had discovered birdseed
from a nearby feeder,
knocked to the ground
by an overzealous squirrel.
It was this guy’s turn
to watch over the food
as the rest of the ducks
swam happily in an open patch of water.
We admired his emerald head
and bright orange feet.
And we decided ducks make for good friends:
they stick together, take turns,
watch out for one another.
Good rules to live by.
I also couldn’t resist
sharing this expiration tag
I found on a bag of breadsticks
in my fridge.
Finally!
A food product that’ll never get stale…
at least not for a thousand years or so.
