When little birds
get pushed out of the nest,
some tumble out against their will,
others flutter their wings
just fast enough to reach the next tree,
and a rare few soar right into the sky.
Katie is one of those rare few,
a remarkable girl who just left the nest
and flew all the way to New Zealand,
where she’ll attend college.
My family has been lucky to know Katie
since the day she was born;
an old soul who seemed to arrive on Earth
with an agenda – a to-do list of sorts –
and a contagious zest for life.
I am inspired to see her inspired,
chasing her dreams,
spreading her wings
and hugging the giant redwoods.
