My parents wept,
moved by the significance,
reminded of the struggle,
inspired by the images of this day.

Meanwhile,
my kindergartener cheered,
eager to tell me the reason
for our nation’s jubilation —
“because Obama’s cool
and not very old.”
No mention of the color of his skin.

Someday he’ll learn
the true meaning and magnitude
of this inauguration,
but he’ll never fully comprehend it.
And for that, I am thankful.
I believe the greatest lesson
for all of us this day
is that our most important source
of renewable energy
is hope.
