I am so fortunate
to live in a city
brimming with art,
bubbling with creativity.

Today,
we spent a glorious afternoon
at the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden,
appreciating art and life
all at once.

My six-year-old
zig-zagged from one sculpture to the next
on his bike,
occasionally stopping
to study art that caught his eye
(which made this mama’s heart swell).

This piece tickled us both
because we discovered a new view:
if you kneel down on the ground
and look up, up, up,
as the artist intended,
you’d swear that big steel beam
is piercing the sky,
poking holes in the clouds
to let more light in.

Really, that’s what art
is all about:
shedding new light
on the world around us.
