I am 99.9% sure that wild mushrooms
exist solely for the benefit of fairies.
They can be anything
those little winged wonders
need them to be:
a trampoline, a soft resting spot,
a gathering place for fellow fairies.

And the underbelly
of that soft mushroom cap?
Well, it’s perfectly designed
for protecting valuables
like pixie dust and sugar plums.

Since fairies are too quick and tiny
for humans to see,
they’re presumed by many
not to exist.
That argument
doesn’t fly with me.

I happen to believe fairies
can only be seen with the heart.
So, whenever you spot
a wild mushroom,
lean in,
close your eyes,
open your heart
and whisper a kind hello.
You just might hear a fairy
whisper back.
