Years ago, before we were married,
my future in-laws bravely headed from Texas
to visit us in the frozen tundra during the middle of winter.
I remember driving around one of our 10,000+ lakes
and they were just floored by the sight
of a skating rink out in the middle of the lake.
Then, when we passed a lake littered with ice houses
(where people fish during the winter),
it was if they’d entered some crazy, alternate reality!
Seeing this ice house and an approaching snowmobile
yesterday at dusk reminded me of this.
Having grown up here, I’d never considered
that others might think it odd to see so many
outdoor enthusiasts embracing the ice and snow.
It just a way of life for many here.
Is it any wonder
more Winter Olympians hail from Minnesota
than from any other state?
