We are all so little when we stand beside the ocean.
But there’s something so heartbreaking and heartwarming
about seeing my own baby boy
fearlessly approaching that great big sea.
When you set sail, little one,
how will you keep yourself safe and sound
when I’m no longer there to protect you?
Will I have taught you everything you need to know
to live a life that’s full of joy and wonderment?
Will you follow your heart,
love with wild abandon,
live with no regrets,
and remember to call your mama?
I love you all the way across the ocean,
up to the moon, around the sun, over the rainbows
and back again.
And I suppose that’s the most important thing
I could ever teach you.
